Hello again, I spent some time in Birmingham city centre last week. Having not been there for some time but knowing about the Selfridges building I knew that wanted to photograph it.

It sticks out like a saw thumb, but when you get up close all you want to do is touch it and look it for as long as you can, the curves and the discs on the side transfix you and keep you looking at what can only be describe as a honeycomb or marshmallow.

Anyway I think the building and the photographs are like none other I have taken, the discs force your eye into the very back of the image and give you the sense of space. I spent a good hour looking for all the angles I could find.

The other day I was photographing at an opticians, nothing strange there. However Robert Roope has been designing 50's style eye wear for me that 30 years. I speak to a Gentleman in St Albans now on a regular basis, and I find him fascinating. His name is Anthony Gregory but everyone knows him as Greg.

He used to be a photographer for a newspaper in Hertfordshire, spending most of his time around the Elstree Studios as it used to be. Mostly he does all the talking about the shoots and assignments that he was sent on. Stories of shooting stars such as Peter O'Toole, Alec Guinness, Norman Wisdom, The Two Ronnies, Howard Wilson, cast of shows such as On the Buses and all kinds of films. He even photographed the Queen Mum.

Anyway on Wednesday he handed over a small memento and New Years Greeting, This image of Eric Morecambe and him was taken on Location during many records of the show. Greg was friends with Ernie Wise before has was even famous and that how a friendship grew with Eric.

I hope that you like the photograph it made me smile.

Welcome Back!!!

Firstly let me say Happy 2011, I hope that you all had a good break and that you have not broken any new resolutions just yet.

You may have noticed a few changes, firstly that I have changed this to a Newsletter rather than a weekly email, you may have noticed that it was not so weekly and so I thought it best to change. Secondly I hope that you like the new layout.

One other piece of news is that on Monday 11th January the February edition of Digital SLR Magazine will be out, and that I will be featured. The magazine has been running various articles about how to make money from your photography, and in this edition they are talking about market stalls. An interview and some of my photographs will be in the issue. This is a pretty exciting event for me, with some national coverage which should hopefully drive some people to my site. This newsletter features some black and white photographs of flowers. I was recently looking through some old photographs and found the first image which I took many years ago in Israel, this inspired me to do some more. I have tried black and white of flowers in the past and have never really been happy with the results, but I think that I am with these ones, let me know what you think.

A Place to go

In the middle of Stanmore is a place that I don't think to many people know about its called the Bentley Priory Nature Reserve. The place is huge going from Stanmore all the way down to Harrow Weald, basically its huge with a mass of wildlife. One of the main attractions is a deer park which although a fence is between you and the deer they all seem completely tame and many were feeding them. Also a large lake can be found with all kinds of birds.

Its a real oasis within the city, when walking round good views of Wembley Stadium and I am sure if you can find the right spot some of London best Sights. I for one will be going back here are some photos that I took on Monday.

Hi I have wanted to take some snowy photos for ages, however since I live in the least snowy area of England its not that easy, imagine my excitement when a few weeks ago some snow fell to the ground. Here is one of the results maybe more to follow.

Portraits - The last few weeks

The last few weeks have been pretty exciting. After the new year I was able to purchase a background and support with the idea of taking portraits. I already have the lasolite ezybox and some other equipment which all sets up pretty quickly and is very light weight.

The idea is to go into homes and set up a studio in front rooms, this gives a relaxed atmosphere and takes out the awkwardness of going down to a studio with all the kids in tow. Also as you may have read in a previous post clients are able to view their personnel photographs on the website and choose which ones they would like. I can provide the photographs in a variety of different formats.

So far response from clients have been very positive most liking the fact that I come right to you, also the ease of use of the web site has been noticed and I have some very positive feedback about that as well.

Two New

Two new things to report. I have recently purchased a sigma 10 - 20 lens which I have wanted for ages. Just thought would be nice to add to the collection, and give the ability to take some nice wide angle shots. Hopefully I will be able to post some photos taken with it on here soon.

Amazingly next week is the start of my debut exhibition, at the Radllet Centre. This will feature many of the photographs that can be found on the website plus some new ones. The exhibition runs from the 29th May - 30th June.

The Gorilla

I Brought a Joby Gorilla Pod the other day, and it all seems pretty good so far. Have not been out and about just yet with it but have played around with it lots, and it is going straight in my bag the next time I do.

Its unique design allows for manipulation and grip, and it comes in two flavours either the compact, or SLR. Basically it allows you to put the tripod in places you could not before. such as the picture below where it is wrapped around a tree.
It stands about 12 inches off the ground and its very light so its not even as if you can complain that its something else to weigh you down when you are out with the camera. I am not sure that it would fulfill all your needs for example, the fact that you can attach it to a tree does not mean that you can stop the tree from blowing around in the breeze. However I can think of many occasions when I would have used this when I did not have my main tripod.

Each small foot has its own grip and the detachable plate means that the camera is kept in place once mounted. So far I have used this upside down, on top of a door, wrapped around the tree, and perched on some stairs and have been impressed each time. At first I was worried that my precious D70 would fall off and come crashing the ground but with time I think that the Gorilla will become a useful tool in my camera bag.

Its quite expensive at £40 for the SLR version, I got mine from Jessops but I am sure that it is available all over the Internet and in all major photographic shops.

Hi I have just created my first set of adwords on the google advertising programme. For those that dont know adwords are the links that you see down the side of main google page that you see when searching. Its basically a pay per click basis and is supposed to increase the traffic and therefore the productivity of your website.

I thought that I would give it a go after reading quite a bit of information on it and in most cases the results are good. I will let you know how it goes hopefully it will lead to more people getting to www.anthonylewisphotography.co.uk which is what it is all about in the end.

I have been reading lots of information on various websites about photographing smoke and thought that i would give it ago, with some interesting results. Its a really simple idea which I think could become a long project.

The idea is not to take photos of smoke but to to use smoke in order to make interesting photographs. Apart from getting pretty well smoked out, I think that it went quite well for a first effort.

Hi its been a while since my last post sorry about that its been a busy period but I am back now.

Over the holiday period I was given a great book called Rain forest by Thoma Marent. This contains loads of great pictures of rain forests and the Eco system within. The photographs and colors are spectacular with easy to read commentary telling you about the photograph its self and the story behind it.

The book is backed by the rain forest foundation and below is a quote from the founding patron Sting.

Photoshop Pluggins

I am generally not a fan of photoshop pluggins however recently I have been using two which are particularly good. I brought both from the same website http://www.fredmiranda.com/software/ and they were both reasonably priced at $25 which at the moment for us Brits works out at around £17 which is not bad at all.

Velvia Vison firstly allows you to add contrast and intensity to your pictures. With a few simple clicks the ability to change a picture from one which maybe a throw away picture into one which looks like a perfect photograph. The functionality is easy with the use of a few sliders and drop down menus you are able to render your pictures in no time.

Secondly I have been using a pluggin called SR pro. We all know sometimes how hard it is for example to take a photograph of a building in shadow and not over expose the nice bright blue sky. With SR pro you have the ability to brighten up the shadows and keep the blue sky. Again a few clicks and your building looks like you took the shot all by your self.

Both of these are pretty neat and give great results, installing them was pretty easy and they appear with any other pluggins on the file menu within photoshop. Check them out I am sure that you won't be disappointed.

Photoshop Tip #3

Adding a vinegrette to a photograph will give you some depth of field, plus can take the attention away from an anoying background thus forcing the viewer to look at what you want them to see.

A few easy steps to do this one really.

Create an elipse using the marquee tool around the area you wish to leave sharp.
Goto the Select menu and choose feather. Add a value of around 10 but you can play around with this.
Goto the Select menu again choose Inverse this will now select the surrounding area.
Choose Filter -> Blur -> Gaussian choose a value of around 10 but again this is something that you can play with in order to create the perfect image.

Listing on the Website

Nikon D70 Upgrade

I found out a whille ago that you could upgrade the firmware on your D70 to that of a D70s which I thought was quite exciting but was also a bit wary of doing this by myself as I did not want to upset the apple cart in terms of hurting my lovely D70. However this weekend i picked up the courage to give him a little makeup over and the results are very interesting. A new menu and some new features. It a pretty simple procedure and only took about 10 minuites in total to do.

Issues addressed in firmware version 2.00-Improved performance for the 5-area autofocus system's Dynamic Area AF and Closest Subject Priority Dynamic Area AF modes.

Updated menus with a new design similar to that of the D70s, making them easier to view and quicker to recognise.
Page size and setup support for PictBridge compatible printers has been added to the camera menu.
The display for number of exposures remaining when using NEF (RAW) or NEF+JPEG Basic image-quality settings has been changed. The number is now calculated based on the average size of a compressed RAW file, instead of the maximum file size.
Maximum number of exposures displayed using a 256-MB CompactFlash memory card:Version 2.00: NEF (RAW): approx. 44 exposures; NEF+JPEG Basic: approx. 39 exposures.Version 1.03 or earlier: NEF (RAW): approx. 23 exposures; NEF+JPEG Basic: approx. 21 exposures
The default setting for the camera clock has been changed from 2004.01.01 to 2005.01.01. The clock can not be set to a date before 2004.12.31.- Correction of a problem that occasionally caused communication between Nikon Capture Camera Control and the D70 to be unexpectedly terminated (Windows).

Also I used the email button to get in contact with some of the engineers before i did it and they were more than happy to help. They got back to me within a couple of hours which i thought was really good.

So if you are brave enough give your D70 a make over and get some better results from your camera and enjoy it even more.

Antoni Gaudi

The man lived and died a modest man, in fact he lied for three days in a hospital before some one realised that it was him, he would eventually die there after being hit by a tram in Barcelona in 1926. His work still looks new and as brilliant as it was at the start of the last century these three photographs come from the top of the Casa Mila were a roof garden like no other can be found. The locals and tourists alike marvel at what can only be describe as genius.

His mind it has to be said was a little misunderstood, it can only be assumed at what he was thinking when he created this building with no straight edges. What must have gone through the minds of the builders when given the plans. However simply by looking at this building and many others all over Barcelona it can be said that Antoni Gaudi had a great mind which in his day was far beyond any other architect, and that it is only until now that we can fully take pleasure in all of his work.

Gallery Software

I searched the Internet for so long to find how to create the perfect photography website. It is generally a hard process, you want the photos to be displayed with quality that will help the viewer want to buy them. However the images themselves must not take to long to load as this will prevent the users from staying and looking in the first place.

The Internet is a great place to find code and Google now even has is own code search which could help you to find out how to do it. Thumbnails with a java roll over or click function will do the job very nicely, but is a little fiddly. Plus the fact that if you are not so used to a computer programming you want to be spending your time selling and taking photographs not learning strange computer languages.

I finally came across a neat solution which cost a few pounds but helped no end. Its a Flash pluggin called Slideshow Pro. Once you have installed it there are a vast amount of options which help you create a gallery which suits your needs and website. For example it has the ability to change all of the colours to whatever you want them to be. All the options are placed in a simple to use menu which is point and click.

The photos themselves are fed to the gallery via an XML file, however this is nothing to be scared of a simple to follow manual is provided with the software and a new gallery can be set up in minutes of purchase.

One of my efforts can be seen here. I really recommend this product its easy to use and gives great results. You probably could do this yourself but to be honest why bother, its all there for you.

Photos always look great as a mono shot, however with most D-SLR cameras there is no mono mode. So here are 3 great ways to change colour photographs to moody mono.

1. Grayscale
Simple and Easy goto the following menu. Image -> Mode -> Grayscale

2. Desaturate
This can be done in two ways
A. The shortcut = ctrl+shift+U
B. The Menu = Image -> Adustments -> Desaturate

3. The 3rd and best way if you have Photoshop CS is to use the Channel Mixer.
The Video below shows how this can be done, it gives you control on all the colours and how much each colour will change. Image -> Adustments -> Channel Mixer. Then tick the monochrome box. Then use the sliders on each of the colours.

Earth from Above

I was recently brought a great book called the Earth from Above by the photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand. http://www.yannarthusbertrand.com/v2/yab_us.htm. You may have seen some of his work but not known it was by him. I am sure that it has been on display in many public areas including outside the Natural History Museum in London, England. The book shows off his work of the world taken from a helicopter. He manages to capture many places that many of us would not be able to reach and in doing so creates a feeling of insignificance compared to the world.

The book is divided into areas of the world and each photograph has its own small synopsis of where it was taken and how the final image was taken. Its available in pretty much all bookshops I would imagine, and would make a great present to anyone that is interested in the world, photography or both.

How to make thumbnails for web sites.

I Have been using a simple piece of software for some time now. Its made by a company called fookes and can be found at the following address: http://www.fookes.com/ezthumbs/ . This will enable you to resize images both in terms of megabytes to kilobytes and in terms of mesurement. This will reduce the loading time of your website and increase the chance that your visitors stay.

Another good reason for not placeing the original image on your website is so that people can not use your perfect image and enlarge them. The smaller image will simply lose its quality when used for anything else than being viewed on your website.

Its freeware so you can use it right now, give it and see what you think.

Photoshop Tip #1

Thought that I would go for something quick an easy for the first Photoshop tip. This will allow a very quick way to boost the colour in your images and the also add a little saturation as well.

Open the image in Photoshop.
In the layers panel drag the background layer down to the new layer icon. This will give you a duplicate background layer.

Make sure that the new layer is selected and choose the following option. Filter -> Blur -> Gaussian Blur.
When the window pops up give a value of somewhere between 2 and 4. You can play with this yourself for best results.

Back in the layers window where the drop down box currently displays "Normal" change this to say "Color".

Now click on the black and white circle and the bottom of the layers window. Choose a Hue/Saturation layer. Now you can slide the saturation handle to the desired position. If you have the preview tick box selected you will be able to display the changes as they happen.

Welcome to Anthony Lewis Photography!

Hopefully this will become a diary of events that have happened to me, and my website www.anthonylewisphotography.co.uk. I have been an ameture photographer now for 5 years and during that time have learnt many techniques and skills with both a 35mm and now a digital SLR. Both of which have there own advantages and disadvantages.

And that poses the first question that i would like to address. Which one do people prefere and why. My own opinon is that I have learnt more during my time with the D-SLR, the ability to see what you are producing at the time of capture is a great asset. This then allows you to change an f-stop up or down or the expoure time to create the perfect image.

However the more traditional 35mm camera gives you a better quality final image than the D-SLR my own D-SLR is a 6.1 mp camera which although gives a sharp image I am sure some enlargements lose some of this quality. Also the contrast using film is by far superior I know this can be changed with software such as Photoshop but is this real to the tradition of photography.

Software such as Photoshop is a art form of its own, its advanced techniques are for the more computer minded however once they are learnt they can produce some exquiset images which may for example on a cloudy day be simply wasted time and money with a 35mm.

The pros and cons are there for all to discuss, I think the argument will reign on for a long time. D-SLR's are growing popularity as time goes by and therefore the price will drop. What are your views on this.
